Hull School of Art and Design

+ + +

Hull School of Art and Design was founded in 1861 and delivers a range of undergraduate and post graduate courses across a range of media to a diverse body of students.
Many of these courses are unique to the city/region and some are unique to art education on a national basis. The School is based in an iconic 1970s building located in the centre of the city overlooking Queens Gardens.

Students are taught in small groups by practising artists, designers and performers and have access to their own design or studio space depending on their speciality.

The programmes are supported by multi-media and digital suites, purpose-built workshops dedicated to 3D and architectural design, industry-standard photographic studios, digital print and editing suites, art studios, textile and fashion workshops, a fully equipped TV studio including a radio and newsroom, recording studios and performance rehearsal spaces.

The Faculty of Arts places great importance on external links. Students enter and are successful in national competitions and benefit from involvement in live projects, commissions and exhibitions. 2016 has seen the launch of Hatch- incubator spaces and mentoring for recent graduates to support the development of new creative industries and initiatives.

Hull has a significant grass roots creative community that make an important contribution to the identity of the city and region. Students and staff from the art school are instrumental to this developing arts scene. One of the aims of Fountain17 is to celebrate Hull artists and the recent history of cutting edge arts organisations and events.

Hull School of Art and Design makes a significant cultural, educational and social contribution to the city and region. Lecturers and students work with colleagues from FE courses in art and design at Hull College with a shared belief in an art education that enables students to think creatively, obliquely and independently; suited for employment but also equipped to initiate, to make things happen. Alongside the professional exhibitions Fountain17 will include student events and exhibitions involving schools, colleges and higher education.
